Kevin Dietz – Extending .NET Applications with Scripts

Allowing your application to be extended by your customers has numerous benefits. Ultimately, it will allow your application to handle more use-case scenarios, which will result in happier customers and increased sales. There are two basic approaches to application extensibility: compiled solutions vs. scripted solutions. Compiled solutions, such as the Managed Extensibility Framework have their place, but don't provide an application-integrated experience to the user. The user must use external tools such as Visual Studio to author and debug the extensions. This talk will explore the scripted approach, and discuss existing .NET solutions for adding scripting capabilities to your application, including PowerShell, S#, the Dynamic Language Runtime and IronRuby. The speaker will also discuss tools for writing your own Domain Specific Language.

Kevin Dietz :  Kevin has been a software engineer and entrepreneur for 20 years, the majority of which has been spent developing application lifecycle management (ALM) tools. He is currently the founder of Timpani Software, which focuses on merge management, build management, and Team Foundation Server consulting. Prior to that he founded TeamShare, makers of the popular TeamTrack defect tracking system, which was acquired by Serena Software in 2003. He also co-founded The Software Edge in the early 1990's, which created the PVCS Tracker defect tracking system, and was acquired by INTERSOLV in 1994. He holds BSEE and MSCS degrees from Michigan Technological University.
